Truax Creek, Clover Ridge Road Bridge
Project Description:
The Clover Ridge Road bridge over Truax Creek was built in 1960 and is located in the quickly growing Northeast Albany area near Interstate 5, the Albany Airport, the Linn County Fairgrounds, and many new developments. It is on an Urban Collector that provides access to Interstate 5 for residential commuters and freight traveling between Albany businesses and the interstate. The current load restriction of 18 tons prevents many potential trucks from using this route.
It has a rotting timber substructure with temporary steel pile installed. This substructure also restricts the flow of water and fish passage through Truax Creek. The superstructure is displaying numerous flexure induced cracks through all girders, heavy amounts of delamination and section loss in the girders, and exposed and rusted reinforcement. The cracking, which has grown over the last few years shows the girders are beginning to fail. The existing bridge will likely be required to be closed upon further degradation which would cause approximately 1,500 vehicles a day to need to use a 2.71 mile detour. The current bridge roadway is 25.6 feet wide, which forces pedestrians to enter the travel lane on a busy road in order to cross the bridge. It also gives little room for potential passing trucks. The timber rail is damaged, decayed, and does not meet current safety standards. The increase in pedestrian and vehicle traffic caused by recent and future developments puts both pedestrians and vehicles at risk in the current configuration.
It is proposed that the existing bridge will be replaced with a single-span prestressed concrete bridge founded on steel pile with reinforced concrete abutments and wingwalls. The roadway width will be 34’ to support future traffic needs. Raised 6’ sidewalks on each side of the roadway will better accommodate pedestrians that use this road. The bridge will also include new approach rails and reinforced concrete end panels at each bridge end to minimize bumps that typically form at bridge abutments.
Additional right of way may need to be acquired from adjacent property owners to accommodate the proposed structure cross section.
During construction, the road will be closed at the bridge site and traffic will be detoured.
